Alumni Festival in Pittsburgh

On Sunday, 14 October 2001, the Westminster Choir College alumni in Western Pennsylvania got together to present a Festival of Hymns and Anthems in celebration of the Choir College's 75th anniversary. The festival took place at St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church in Mount Lebanon where Stephen Schall is the musician. The program reminded most of us of graduation as there was a brass ensemble and most of the music was comfortably familiar. The alumni took turns conducting which could have been a disaster had not the choirs been well trained by Westminster graduates. Dean Robert Annis honored us with his presence and introduced Elsie Hillman who told the gathering of her long association with and support for our Alma Mater. If you would like more information, email me. See the program and photos of those of us who participated.

If you haven't seen Erdman Hall, you really need to visit the campus and tour the building. It is beautiful and functional. See photos.

Why Westminster Choir College?

Westminster Choir College is the ONLY college for a choral junkie whose primary interest in life is singing in choirs. All students must sing in at least one choir. Undergrads must sing all four years - daily rehearsals. Upperclass students (other than first year transfers) and grad students sing in Symphonic Choir which performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New Jersey Symphony and others. All first year undergrads sing in Chapel Choir under the direction of nationally-known choral technician James Jordan. Second year undergrads sing with Schola Cantorum under the direction of Heather Buchanan. Joseph Flummerfelt prepares and conducts Symphonic Choir plus the world renowned auditioned Westminster Choir. Another auditioned group Westminster Singers is led by Andrew Megill. Other choral opportunities are Chapel Ensemble with Steve Pilkington which sings at weekly chapel, Donald Dumpson's Jubilee Singers which provide the gospel experience and, after the freshman year, graduate conductors' recital choirs.

The Choir College also provides a first class musical education in a variety of fields. The schedule is rigorous. The rewards are tremendous. More information and a CD are available by calling 1-800-96-CHOIR, the Admissions office.

Continuing Education at Westminster Choir College has one of the largest summer music programs in the US. During the school year, Saturday Seminars are offered. Information about music-related adult courses plus great summer experiences for younger musicians is available by email or by phone (609) 924-7416, ext 227 or by fax (609) 2525-0477 or by snail mail - Office of Continuing Education, Westminster Choir College of Rider University, 101 Walnut Lane, Princeton, NJ 08540-3899.

A familiar sight at graduation is the Westminster Choir College banner - it is a JPEG file

Spoleto Festival USA:

The Westminster Choir is the choir in residence at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, SC in late May and early June each year. This arts festival was founded by Gian Carlo Menotti then abandoned by him in '94. More specific information about the Festival is available at the Spoleto Festival USA website. The Choir sings several concerts plus provides the opera choruses.

Piccolo Spoleto has excellent offerings for far less money. Their concerts provide diverse "filler" between Festival events.

Read the '99 Spoleto Festival USA reviews in the Charleston Post and Courier - I hope this is the 2001 link.
