Pymatuning Neighborhood Links
My home faces Pymatuning Lake, a reservoir on the Ohio - Pennsylvania border built by the WPA in the 1930s. Our large lake has many assets, especially the 10 hp limit on motors. Although we lose a fisherman or two every spring to carelessness (email me if you're curious), we have a treasured quietude that makes Pymatuning a fisherman's paradise. The lack of waterskiers, speedboats and jet skis and the relatively flat Ohio terrain make the lake a sailor's delight as well. The dream of sailing from one end to the other and back usually becomes a nightmare as the length of the lake and the prevailing winds - or lack of them - can suddenly cause a very long paddle.
The wildlife here may not be very exotic - except perhaps during migrations - but it is abundant. There are 62 birds on my seen-from-my-yard life list which has not been updated for at least ten years. And I've never tried to identify warblers or shorebirds. I see bald eagles at least once every year. There is a beaver lodge on the island. Once upon a time we had snakes and huge toads but I haven't seen either around the house for many years. A family of ferrets or snakes would be nice as chipmunks have taken over. I only feed black oilseed to the birds, squirrels and chipmunks. I have only two large orange and one or two tiny red squirrels. Deer meander through the yard occasionally. There are wild turkeys (birds) in the neighborhood but I haven't seen them here yet. It's a great place to live!
